Alexander Garsoev (Garsoyan)

First designer of Soviet submarines

Alexander Garsoev (Garsoyan) is one of the rare scientists in history who practiced in the offshore waters of military operations.

However, underwater activity in any case was risky, even in peacetime – the overwhelming majority of the first submariners died during the experiments.

Alexander Garsoev (1882-1934) was born in Tblisi in the noble family of the shipbuilder Nikolai Garsoev.

Captain Garsoev later became the first designer and constructor of Soviet submarines.

Due to the hard work of Garsoev and his supporters, the Soviet Union, occupying one of the last places in the world in the field of military shipbuilding, soon began to offer the latest technologies to the scientists of the superpowers of the time.

Within a short time, the country outpaced the leading counties in the field of shipbuilding.

In December 1925, Garsoev was included in a special Subcommittee to develop an industry order for the construction of the first submarines. In January 1926, the Science and Technology Committee of the Soviet Navy began to develop a project for the first Soviet submarine under the leadership of A.N. Garsoev.

Later A. Garsoev took part in the construction of submarines of “Dekabrist” type, headed the Scientific and Technical Commission of the Red Army Navy, was the head of the Department of Material Combat Equipment of the Russian Fleet.

In 1930s, he headed the development and construction of small and medium submarines and created the classifications of Soviet submarines.
